After the failure of the partition of Palestine into a Jewish and an Arab state, the British mandate expired on May 15, 1948. Six hours earlier, to not coincide with the Sabbath, on the afternoon of May 14, it had been proclaimed by David Ben-Gurion Israel's independence in Tel Aviv, quickly recognized by several countries. On the same day of the British withdrawal from the region, Israel was at war with: Lebanon and Syria from the north; Iraq and Jordan from the east; and Egypt who was assisted by contingents from the Sudan from the south. Israel was also at war with the Palestinians and volunteers from Arab countries in the interior of the country. The final days brought about the birth of the IDF as well as the armistice agreement with Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria; creating Israel’s borders.
