Birthday of Stephen Wise, American Rabbi and Zionist leader. After WWI, he worked closely with President Woodrow Wilson and helped obtain his support for the Balfour Declaration in 1917. As head of the World Jewish Congress, Wise was one of the first Jews to receive information about Hitler's plan for the Final Solution. He received President Roosevelt's permission to ransom Jews from the Nazis, but the State Department aborted the plan.
