SHABBAT TZION

Connecting To Israel Through Torah And Shabbat

Shabbat is the highlight of the Jewish week, the day that represents not only a physical day of rest, but also a spiritual menuchah (spiritual rest). Each week we light candles, drink wine at Kiddush, eat a festive meal and slow down our hectic lives to enjoy family and friends. We fill our Shabbat with meaning, and delve into the depths of Torah.

Each parsha gives us different insight into life and our place in the world.

Shabbat Tzion is a special initiative that, in conjunction with Zionism Month, focuses on the first parshiyot that teach us of our historical roots as Jews and our connection to Zion (Tzion): the portions from Bereishit, the Book of Genesis: from Lech-Lecha to Vayishlach.

Throughout the year we look at other portions of the Torah as well to study what they too can teach us about ourselves as a nation and the connection to our ancestral homeland.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT:

  • Has this Shabbat Tzion material influenced thinking (yours or others) on your connection to Zion?
  • What do you think we can learn from the Torah about the importance of the land to our Jewish identity?
  • What do you feel are the lessons from the Biblical stories that most relate to Jewish life in the Diaspora?
