My Dream, My Herzl
The phrase ‘I have a dream’ is most famously known as spoken by Martin Luther King. However over a century earlier, Theodor Herzl had a dream for the Jewish people to have a land of their own once again, to govern themselves, and live free from the persecution of living as a Jew in the Diaspora as the target of endless hatred.
It is written in Psalms, Tehillim, “When God brings about the return to Zion, we were like dreamers. Then our mouths will be filled with laughter, and our tongues with joyous song.” (126:1-2). Herzl’s dream helped us return to Zion, and formed the movement today referred to as Zionism, the Jewish national movement for self-determination and freedom in our ancestral homeland.
Why was Herzl’s dream considered impossible? With Israel now a thriving embodiment of Herzl’s dream, how does it connect to Jewish life today? How does it inspire our dreams, and what is our role in keeping his dream alive for future generations to inherit? This activity explores the relevance of Herzl’s Dream and its connection to every one of us.
