Lone Soldier Center Yom HaZikaron Memorial Ceremony

By Joshua Flaster, Former Lone Soldier and National Director of the Lone Soldier Center in Memory of Michael Levin

Since 1948, tens of thousands of lone soldiers have come from the four corners of the earth to serve in the IDF and defend Israel. Of those thousands, hundreds of lone soldiers have fallen in combat defending our people. I came to Israel 11 years ago, on my own, as a lone soldier, and sadly have lost good friends in the army, and since my release from active-duty service, had to say goodbye far too early to lone soldiers I'd help advise and integrate into Israel.

We are holding this ceremony, in Jerusalem, on Ammunition Hill - for them.

Yom Hazikaron, Memorial Day for the IDF's soldiers, is the most difficult and deepest day of the year for most soldiers and veterans in Israel. The day leaves us with more questions than answers. But nonetheless, the day leaves me determined and resolved to do everything in my power to bring respect, meaning, and hopefully smiles from above by leading a life and moving forward the people and country our soldiers and these lone soldiers fell defending.
